I want to set the Streaming replication between two different postgresql versions - postgresql

my primary server is Postgresql-9.4 and the secondary server is Postgresql-13, I followed all the steps but while restarting the secondary server, I am facing the error "An old version of the database format was found. You need to dump and reload before using PostgreSQL 13." how I should resolve it.

You cannot have streaming replication between different PostgreSQL versions, and you cannot have logical replication with versions less than v10.
You will have to use trigger-based replication like with Slony-I.

How to do logical replication on cascading standby server on postgres?

Is it possible to enable logical replication on standby server which is in cascading replication mode?
According Debezium connector for PostgreSQL docs:
As of release 12, PostgreSQL allows logical replication slots only on primary servers. This means that you can point a Debezium PostgreSQL connector to only the active primary server of a database cluster. Also, replication slots themselves are not propagated to replicas. If the primary server goes down, a new primary must be promoted.

There are discussions in the PostgreSQL community around a feature called failover slots that would help mitigate this problem, but as of PostgreSQL 12, they have not been implemented.
This feature is not implemented for the latest PostgreSQL release 13.

Validating the postgres upgrade using logical replication

Currently I am trying to upgrade my postgres 9.1 to 10 using logical replication. As 9.1 does not support native logical_replication, I tried slony and made a replica successfully.
P.S. The above replica I created is using a sample dump from an year ago which is only of 800mb.
Now I have few questions.
How can I validate whether the replica has all the data replicated successfully. Few suggested to put the master on maintenance mode(few downtime) and do a last N items comparison with both the database on all the tables.
I tried with 800mb. Will there be any problem when I go and try with 100+ GB?
Please share your personal experience here. I have been trying to document what are the things that could go wrong so I can always try to anticipate the next course of action.

Replication of AWS RDS Postgresql into On-Premise Postgresql

I have a requirement of replicate data from AWS RDS Postgres(9.6) Database to On-Premise Postgres(9.5) Database. I have found stuff about replication from On-premise to On-premise. But How can we implement it for AWS RDS to On-premise?
I do this using Bucardo.

With Bucardo you can replicate RDS postgres instance to a slave postgres present somewhere, only configuring slave, so without the needs to configure RDS stuff.
Also you can do this with zero downtime.
Anyway I am not sure this will work using different versions of Postgresql. You should use same version if possible. I tested it with 9.4.x and it is working.

I can confirm that this is working also using different version of Postgres, for example I was able to replicate with these versions:

OpenERP 5.16 configuration to connect different database

How to configure a different way of accessing the database in OpenERP?
I have one already installed OpenERP server version 5.16 and the PostgreSQL 9.1, I did a master-slave database replication to another server. so I have three servers, the first one already installed OpenERP and PostgreSQL, the second master replication of postgresql, the third slave replication of postgresql, how do I access a database that has been replicated?

Mirror one database to another in PostgreSQL

I know the way to set up a Master/Slave DB in Postgres is having 2 DB servers, but unfortunately i have only one server for now.
How can i mirror my production db into another "backup db" in "real_time"? I want to give access to another user to the mirrored db, so even if he does something there it will not affect production.
Nothing stops you setting up hot standby streaming replication, or another replication option like Londiste, between two PostgreSQL instances on the same computer.
The two copies of PostgreSQL must use different ports, but that's the only real restriction.
How to set up the second PostgreSQL instance depends on your operating system and how you installed PostgreSQL, which you have not mentioned.
You'll want to use streaming replication with hot standby if you want a read-only replica. If you want it to be read/write, then you can do a one-off copy of the database with pg_basebackup and not keep them in sync after that. Or you can use a tool like Londiste to replicate changes selectively.
You can run multiple instances of PostgreSQL on the same computer, by using different ports.
