When I press F5 while developing an extension to launch the Extension Development Host, it automatically opens the desktop directory. I'd like to change this, but I can't find anything relevant in launch.json or settings.
After reinstalling and updating, it just opens the last folder I opened.

I am setting up my VS Code environment for the first time, but I can't figure out how to set Chrome as the default browser for the workspace.
Go to file-> preferences -> user settings -> search "By Default it will open your default favorite browser" set your browser.
The other StackOverflow questions regarding the browser, had to do with opening a specific file. Here are the steps to creating a tasks.json file in a brand new environment.
From the Tasks menu, Select 'Configure Tasks'
The entry field prompts you for 'Select a task to configure'
Choose 'Create tasks.json file from template'
Edit the file to include the following block:

Chrome can be launched by way of debugging your application. Within launch.json, the configurations[].serverReadyAction.action configuration was given a possible value of debugWithChrome in the VS Code February 2019 release. Note that this will also require you have the Debugger for Chrome extension installed. You will not receive a warning if the extension is not installed and you've configured launch.json to use debugWithChrome.
Note: Configuring launch.json with debugWithChrome will work even if you launch using CTRL+F5 to run the app without debugging.
Go to Settings -> Extensions -> Live Server Config -> Update Default Browser:

The method of modifying tasks.json no longer works in newer versions of Visual Studio Code. The easiest way to be able to launch your code in a browser is to install the Open in Browser extension from the marketplace.
After it is installed and VS Code is reloaded, you can go to your code and press ALT + B to launch your application in your default browser or ALT + SHIFT + B to select the browser you want to use.
You can also right click and select these option from a drop down menu, but I mention this last because this currently does not work in some versions of VS Code.
Just a helper for the windows users, I just installed windows 10 again and I was wondering how do I set my vscode to open the server (web) using chrome instead of edge, so to do that you just have to configure your windows to use google chrome as default, you don't need to change anything in vscode, I hope this helps someone.
ps: normally you can go open browser you want to be default and setup the configuration. so in chrome you have to go to configurations and scroll down to default browser.
When you want to use your own browser using "Open with Live Server" without change OS globally configuration.
In Windows, Visual Studio Code (ver. 1.70.1 (July 2022)). Go to "File" > "Preferences" > "Settings"
Then select a tab, "User" tab if you want your desired browser for all your projects, or select "Workspace" tab or "ProjectName" tab for especified projects.
Then go to "Extensions" > "Live Server Config" > "Settings: Custom Browser" finally change the 'null' value selecting the browser of your preference from the list (apparently this list depends on installed browsers but i'm not sure).
search for local.testsettings on vscode on the search and for web tests, change the browser to chrome and apply.
The Live Server extension was not appearing for me on settings. However, I installed Open in Browser and typed "liveServer.settings.CustomBrowser" in settings and the extension appeared with a dropdown box in which I was able to change the default browser.

This may be old but I found something that could help.
First go to Settings/Apps/Default Apps. Set your browser as default.
Next go to VSCODE and go to File/Preferences/Settings/Extensions/LiveServerConfig
Then scroll to settings: CustomBrowser
Change it to your custom browser
Note- If the browsers don't show up on VSCODE then you need to set it to default in the settings.
You can adjust settings in your computer to open.HTML file extensions in chrome as a default browser:
for Example in PC windows:
go to Control Panel > Default programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a specific programs >HTML extension and choose Chrome.
In my case changing the default browser in the system settings of my pc did it.
None of the above works in my case(my version is August 2022 1.71) to make it work I went straight to **
File-->Preferences-->Settings-->Extensions-->Plugin open-in browser
** from there was a option which says Default set browser so I choose Brave as there is no ads in it while playing the video as chrome plays ads so for getting a proper feeling of using my self made Jarvis I used Brave.

recently I installed a fresh version of the KDE neon user edition and I updated it and works fine.
I also installed the vscode Debian version and nothing is wrong.
but when I want to login with my GitHub account in vscode for configs sync it opens a firefox tab that I log in to my GitHub and authorizes the vscode and it succeeds and gets back to vscode and instead of signing in and syncing the configs it opens an empty unsaved file named something like this:
did-authenticate\?windowid\=1\&code\=6beea2fcb8a47e0ea49e\&state\=2efc5efd-9c68-4735-a4a0-fd690dd7aec0
in this path : "~/vscode:/vscode.GitHub-authentication"
and after a few seconds canceled notification appears.
I've installed vscode for Debian version 1.63.2 which people in this Github issue had the same problem in version 1.62.2 and they are saying that this problem is fixed for them in version 1.62.3.
I don't have this problem with the Microsoft account sign-in.
what am I missing?

for testing, I tried to install an extension for vscode and I pasted the URL with vscode protocol in a web browser like this (vscode:extension/GitHub.vscode-pull-request-github), and instead of opening the vscode extensions tab, it goes back to vscode and opens an empty file in the same directory ("~/vscode:/vscode.GitHub-authentication").
so this is vscodes fault that cant handle the vscode: URLs.
I found out what the problem is but I don't know how to fix it
for the record I've updated the vscode today to the 1.64.1 version and still have the problem.

First, you need to get the GitHub Pull Requests and Issues and GitHub extensions together. Then go to the section specified in the photo and give the details of the account and repository you are using. And then it will be fixed.
I ran into this issue myself and discovered that it's because the VS Code command-line application isn't designed to handle URLs, but local file paths. VS Code registers the vscode:// URL scheme with XDG using an appropriate *.desktop file and these URLs should be opened using the command-line program xdg-open. In Firefox, if you have not yet set a default application for vscode:// URLs, then it will ask you for a program to open it with, select /usr/bin/xdg-open. If you have already set it to a different default, you can change it as follows: go to the Menu -> Settings -> General -> Applications -> vscode -> Use other... -> Select /usr/bin/xdg-open as the program for vscode.
With the default for vscode:// URLs set to use xdg-open, then any future integration with VS Code should work naturally to open it as expected.
I don't know what happen, but I was working on VSCODE in windows adding neovim path to the settings.json.
I clicked inside the settings.json and vscode started to open new editor tabs by itself with the same content of settings.json.
I have uninstalled vscode several times, removed the Appdata roaming vscode, the Appdata local code, etc. I installed the vscode again and same behavior. I restarted my windows machine and same behavior.
The sync is on so the settings replicates to all my vscode installations. I started my Linux machine to see if this was something that replicated to my linux version. No, it is working normal.
I can work on VScode if I don't open the settings. It has open new editors (clones of settings) upto 500 hundred times.
I was able to stop it when I changed directory and it asked me if I wanted to close and all open tabs. The moment that I go to settings starts again.
You could start to not sync extentions. Maybe one is breaking it.
But You could also try to install an older version of vs code.
How to downgrade vscode
I have small problem with VSCode folder, that opened by default.
Problem description: I start new instance of VSCode (trough File->New Window), and then if I choose File->Open Folder it opens dialog with my Windows user folder as starting point (C:\Users\MyUser)
Question: How can I change that folder in settings (if it possible)? So by default it will show as start point for example D:\development\ ?
At the time I write this answer, this is not possible. There are two problems on Windows, and one problem on Mac and Linux:
VS Code does not provide a default path to the file dialog 1. It does remember the last folder that you opened a file in, but that path cannot be used as a default because it is overwritten constantly.
On Windows only, Electron ignores the default path when creating a file dialog if the default path is a directory 2.
An extension also cannot solve this, because extensions are not allowed to modify the File menu 3.
I think the best option at this point is to pin a folder to the Quick Access area in Windows Explorer, as suggested in a comment, or to put an actual shortcut in the user profile folder.
Workspaces and File > Open Recent may also be helpful if you often open the same folders.
Your main problem is that you are unable to open your specific folder in VScode.
To solve that you can simply open the terminal/cmd in that specific window by just typing cmd in your search bar or just by pressing shift+right-click in that folder.
Now your cmd is open and you just have to type "code ." in the cmd and press enter to open the current folder in your VSCode.
In case that code . doesn't work for you then you have to add the Vscode in the environment variables of your windows.
Visual Studio doesn't provide a specific feature to open a specific path. But there is a solution to your problem. You are saying that you want D:\develpment as a default when you open VS Code. You can go to that specific directory or create shortcut to desktop then click right click on that folder and then click on open with code. If you didnot see open with code then reinstall your VS code and check on open with code when you are reinstalling VS Code.
make a shortcut on the desktop for vscode and then modify it and add the folder after the .exe command. This will default open that folder when you double click on it.
Visual Studio Code can be installed in two ways - User setup and System setup. I strongly believe you have User setup installed in your PC. Try re-installing it System-wide. That should probably fix your problem.

I am using VScode version 1.45 with Firefox version 76.0.1 as a default browser (with Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS). Whenever I tried to open a link in the VSCode, it will open the Firefox browser under same icon as VSCode, and I cannot merge these tabs into existing Firefox web browser.
Same thing also happens when I try to run a program using live server extension. But when I use npm to start the development server, it will create a new window or tab under the Firefox icon.
How could I fix this so whenever I open a browser from VSCode, it will create a new browser or tab under the appropriate (Firefox) icon? Thank you.
There is already an issue on VSCode's GitHub repository and as it is mentioned in the issue, origin of the issue is in snapd.
To fix the issue, as mentioned on aforementioned github issue:
Open some URL from the VSCode snap.
In the new window, navigate to about:profiles.
Ensure that the profile marked as "Default Profile" matches Firefox when opened normally. If not, use the "Set as default profile" button under the correct profile to change the default.
Try making firefox your default browser thorugh firefox and also do check that firefox is your default browser from vscode

You might have installed VSCode as a snap package, which causes
$XDG_CACHE_HOME to be set to ~/snap/code/common/.cache, which could
cause some cli tools to mistake that for your cache directory, and
install/launch binaries from there.
If you install VSCode from the .deb download, it should fix your issue
I removed vscode from Ubuntu software and download the .deb file from vscode site and install it ... problem solved
