iphone add notification icon to uitoolbar - iphone

i am building an application which every 5 minutes get new data from server. i want to notify user with the number of new data added to his previous ones. i am using tool bar and i want to show this icon in a specific place. see the code i used:
// notification button
UIButton *notifications=[UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeRoundedRect];
notifications.bounds = CGRectMake( 40, 34, 20,20 );
[notifications setTitle:#"1" forState:UIControlStateNormal];
notifications.backgroundColor = [ UIColor clearColor];
[notifications addTarget:self action:nil forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside];
// add to uibutton
UIBarButtonItem *notify = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithCustomView:notifications];
items = [NSArray arrayWithObjects: add, search,flexItem,currentLoc,notify,logoLabel, nil];
but the button is not showing in the place declared (40,30),, any help ?

You need to pass UIButton as :
// notification button
UIButton *notifications=[UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeRoundedRect];
notifications.bounds = CGRectMake( 40, 34, 20,20 );
[notifications setTitle:#"1" forState:UIControlStateNormal];
notifications.backgroundColor = [ UIColor clearColor];
[notifications addTarget:self action:nil forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside];
// Pass your button in UIBarButtonItem here
UIBarButtonItem *barButton = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithCustomView:notifications];
[toolBar setItems:[NSArray arrayWithObject:barButton]];
Hope it helps you.

How to create multiline backBarButtonItem in UINavigationBar

I want to create multiline BackBarButtonItem. right now my back button display like this,
but i want to display it like this, color does not matter,
How can I do that? And this is my default back button which added while i am pushing my childviewcontroller thru my parentviewcontroller so i dont want to remove it.
You can do it using custom image,UILabel(MSLabel),UIButton.
MSLabel is used to change space between two line of UILabel. Because UILabel Does not provide any property to do that.
After you add MSLabel in your project use this code. Recommend size for backbtn.png is 48*30.
#import "MSLabel.h"
- (void)viewDidLoad
{
[super viewDidLoad];
// Set the custom back button
UIImage *buttonImage = [[UIImage imageNamed:#"backbtn.png"]
resizableImageWithCapInsets:UIEdgeInsetsMake(0, 13, 0, 5)];
//create the button and assign the image
UIButton *button = [UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeCustom];
[button setBackgroundImage:buttonImage forState:UIControlStateNormal];
MSLabel *lbl = [[MSLabel alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(12, 4, 65, 28)];
lbl.text = #"Account Summary";
lbl.backgroundColor = [UIColor clearColor];
//lbl.font = [UIFont fontWithName:#"Helvetica" size:12.0];
lbl.numberOfLines = 0;
lbl.lineHeight = 12;
lbl.verticalAlignment = MSLabelVerticalAlignmentMiddle;
lbl.font = [UIFont fontWithName:#"Helvetica" size:12];
[button addSubview:lbl];
//set the frame of the button to the size of the image (see note below)
button.frame = CGRectMake(0, 0, 70, buttonImage.size.height);
[button addTarget:self action:#selector(back) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside];
//create a UIBarButtonItem with the button as a custom view
UIBarButtonItem *customBarItem = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithCustomView:button];
self.navigationItem.leftBarButtonItem = customBarItem;
}
-(void)back {
NSLog(#"Dilip Back To ParentViewController");
// Tell the controller to go back
[self.navigationController popViewControllerAnimated:YES];
}
Outcome will display like this, Use your image for better result.
In this case you should use custom button and use background image on this button.Because i think it may not be possible.See for custom button
UIButton *backBtn = [[UIButton alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(10.0f,6.5f,60.0f,30.0f)];
[backBtn setBackgroundImage:[UIImage imageNamed:#"accountSummary"] forState:UIControlStateNormal];
[backBtn setBackgroundImage:[UIImage imageNamed:#"accountSummary"] forState:UIControlStateHighlighted];
[backBtn addTarget:self action:#selector(accountSummaryBtnPressed:) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside];
UIBarButtonItem *leftButton = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithCustomView:backBtn];
[self.navigationItem setLeftBarButtonItem:leftButton];
- (void)accountSummaryBtnPressed:(id)sender
{
//--------- do stuff for account summary
}
What i believe you can Create CustomView with ImageView And Transparent label with numberOflines more than two or whatever you want to restrict it to , then replace the navigation back button with That Barbutton initiated with CustomVIew, That Can Solve your problem,, Hope fully

How to make visible a leftBarButtonItem created programmatically and set backgroundimage

Below code is working fine in my application. But that leftbarbuttonitem is invisible. And I can't set background image to leftBarButtonItem. I did some thing wrong, but I don't know what is the mistake? Is it possible to make visible and set background image?
UIImageView *NavigationBarImage =[[UIImageView alloc]initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0, 0, 320, 44)];
NavigationBarImage.image=[UIImage imageNamed:#"mapbutton.png"];
[self.navigationController.navigationBar addSubview:NavigationBarImage];
self.navigationItem.hidesBackButton = YES;
UIBarButtonItem *backButton = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithBarButtonSystemItem:UIBarButtonItemStyleBordered target:self action:#selector(goBack)];
self.navigationItem.leftBarButtonItem = backButton;
-(void)goBack
{
[self.navigationController popViewControllerAnimated:YES];
}
If you want to add a backgroundImage to your navigation item you have to add a custom button, like bellow:
UIButton *tempButton = [UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeCustom];
tempButton.frame = CGRectMake(0, 0, 50, 30);
tempButton.showsTouchWhenHighlighted = YES;
tempButton.backgroundColor = [UIColor clearColor];
[tempButton setBackgroundImage:[UIImage imageNamed:#"back.png"] forState:UIControlStateNormal];
[tempButton setTitle:#"Back" forState:UIControlStateNormal];
[tempButton addTarget:self action:#selector(goBack) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside];
UIBarButtonItem *backBtn = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc]initWithCustomView:tempButton];
self.navigationItem.leftBarButtonItem = backBtn;
And to add a background Image to navigation bar you can use the following code
[self.navigationController.navigationBar setBackgroundImage:[UIImage imageNamed:#"header.png"] forBarMetrics:UIBarMetricsDefault];
UIButton *home = [UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeCustom];
UIImage *homeImage = [UIImage imageNamed:#"YOUR_IMAGE.png"];
[home setBackgroundImage:homeImage forState:UIControlStateNormal];
[home addTarget:self action:#selector(your_Action)
forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside];
home.frame = CGRectMake(0, 0, 69, 26);
UIBarButtonItem *button2 = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithCustomView:home];
[[self navigationItem] setLeftBarButtonItem:button2];
[button2 release];
button2 = nil;

change back button of UINavigationBar

I have this code that changes the back button of my UINavigationBar
// Set the custom back button
UIImage *buttonImage = [UIImage imageNamed:#"backag.png"];
//create the button and assign the image
UIButton *button = [UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeCustom];
[button setImage:buttonImage forState:UIControlStateNormal];
[button setImage:[UIImage imageNamed:#"selback.png"] forState:UIControlStateHighlighted];
button.adjustsImageWhenDisabled = NO;
//set the frame of the button to the size of the image (see note below)
button.frame = CGRectMake(0, 0, 30, 30);
[button addTarget:self action:#selector(back) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside];
//create a UIBarButtonItem with the button as a custom view
UIBarButtonItem *customBarItem = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithCustomView:button];
self.navigationItem.leftBarButtonItem = customBarItem;
// Cleanup
[customBarItem release];
If I put it in the viewDidLoad method it works fine. However, when I load the next view the old style button shows up. To fix this I tried putting this code in the next view's viewDidLoad method, but then no button is visible.
Any ideas as to what might be causing this?
Thanks!
Apply same code in
-(void)viewDidAppear:(BOOL)animated
{
}
I used tis code in both view and it's worked fine...
// add following code in your both view's viewDidLoad method...
UIButton *leftButton1 = [UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeCustom];
[leftButton1 setImage:[UIImage imageNamed:#"Viewone.png"] forState:UIControlStateNormal];
leftButton1.frame = CGRectMake(0, 0, 30, 30);
[leftButton1 addTarget:self action:#selector(yourclickevent) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside];
self.navigationItem.leftBarButtonItem = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithCustomView:leftButton1];
[leftButton1 release];
UIButton *leftButton = [UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeCustom];
[leftButton setImage:[UIImage imageNamed:#"ViewSecond.png"] forState:UIControlStateNormal];
leftButton.frame = CGRectMake(0, 0, 30, 30);
[leftButton addTarget:self action:#selector(yourclickevent) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside];
self.navigationItem.leftBarButtonItem = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithCustomView:leftButton];
[leftButton release];
Hope,this will help you...enjoy..
You need to ensure you set the hidesBackButton property on the navigationItem:
// Setup custom back button
self.navigationItem.hidesBackButton = YES;

action:#selector(addbuttonview)];
self.navigationItem.leftBarButtonItem = flipButtons;
[flipButtons release];
}

How to give style in left nav bar button in iphone

I added 2 button with images in top left navigation bar. But I am getting problem in its style. Here is my screenshot of button. And this is code of button which I have written in application.
UIView *viewButtons = [[UIView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0, 0, 150, 32)];
UIButton *button1 = [[UIButton alloc] init];
button1.frame=CGRectMake(0,0,40,35);
[button1 setBackgroundImage:[UIImage imageNamed: #"remainder.png"] forState:UIControlStateNormal];
[button1 addTarget:self action:#selector(sortByremainder) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside];
[viewButtons addSubview:button1];
UIButton *button2 = [[UIButton alloc] init];
button2.frame=CGRectMake(45,0,60,35);
[button2 setBackgroundImage:[UIImage imageNamed: #"like_symbol.jpg"] forState:UIControlStateNormal];
[button2 addTarget:self action:#selector(sortByMostFaved) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside];
[viewButtons addSubview:button1];
[viewButtons addSubview:button2];
self.navigationItem.leftBarButtonItem = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc]initWithCustomView:viewButtons];
[viewButtons release];
But i want my button style should be like this image. I want to keep images in button but below screen is more specific with button. It has border and convex area.
For that you need to use grayscale images and that would look better. See example like attached.
You need to use UIBarButtonItem and set this type of images in that and that assign that UIBarButtonItem to self.navigationItem.leftBarButtonItem.
Also, Use BarButtonItemStyle Border like below so you will get as you want.
UIBarButtonItem *btnSetting = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithImage:[UIImage imageNamed:#"setting.png"] style:UIBarButtonItemStyleBordered target:self action:#selector(setting:)];
self.navigationItem.rightBarButtonItem = btnSetting;
