What does the error mean? How can I correct it? There is no file name provided.
The only idea I have seen vaguely by searching is to reinstall VS2017. For lack of time I have not done this yet.

I would like to give more context. But many things were changed before the application was run again. So I do not want to submit superstitious ideas yet. Close and Open VS2017.
VS2017 gives me this error even if I create a new blank UWP application.

I had the same problem. Deleting the App from Apps & Features solved the problem for me.

After deleting AppData/Local/Microsoft/VisualStudio folder, and restarting
Visual Studio, this error disappears, and blank projects will deploy normally.

Uninstalled the UWP apps from apps and features worked for me.

What worked for me was to right click on the solution and click Properties, selected assembly information and incremented the Assembly Version and File Version and recompiled it. Don't ask me why this worked, I have no idea but it worked for me.
In the error that was flagged up it contained the version number 1.3.3.3 so I just changed it to 1.4.1.1 and it worked.

Visual Studio 2017 failing to install nuget package in .NET 4.7 project

I'm getting the following error when attempting to install a nuget package into a standard .NET framework 4.7 project:
The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters.
I'm using Visual Studio 2017 15.3.3 Enterprise (latest and greatest).
Given that this is my package, I have full control over the source code. The interesting part is that I have used this package in the past with no changes in the name, but for this go round, I rebuilt it to add a feature and am now getting this error.
Even more interesting is that I have packages from the same library, with the same namespace conventions, with longer names, that work just fine and have installed into this same project with no problems at all.
I have already tried shrinking the package name, shrinking the class names within the package itself, cleaning out the build directory, cleaning out the package home from the nuget server (it's a local server with the latest nuget.server installed which otherwise works just fine), and even clearing out the bin directory of the project in question, clearing out ALL the bin directories of ALL the ancestors to the "offending" package, clearing out the package cache, rebooting the computer and rebuilding the entire nuget package chain from scratch, all to no avail. I was told by one of the MS MVP's that "they fixed that". Apparently not.
Any help would be appreciated here, I'm at my wit's end and have run out of ideas to try.

OK, big Thank You #danmosemsft who suggested digging around with the SysInternals process monitor. After fiddling with it for a bit, I finally figured out how to narrow the result set to just file activity. What I noticed, and the nuget engineers should TAKE NOTE of this: The problem was NOT a too-long project name, rather, nuget was attempting to update a package that was no longer there. Why it went away is a mystery yet to be solved. I normally stay out of the packages directory and do not fuss with the packages.config file. I think that this might have to do with my impatience waiting for VS to start, load all the goodies and then allow me to perform a "Manage NuGet packages" - update all. I remember seeing an update to either NUnit or FluentAssertions that wanted to perform some additional file activity aside from just installing the next version, a script I believe. Can't speak to it with assurance, I wasn't paying that much attention as third party updates usually "just work". I didn't see the "finished" line from NuGet so I think that was the root of my problem. Rather than wait until VS has settled down, I pushed it a bit (hey, the buttons responded so there shouldn't be any problems...).
As a result, the packages directory was absolutely chock full of old stuff that did NOT belong there. So, I manually cleaned up all the cruft, manually cleaned up the packages.config file, restarted VS, waited for it to settle down, performed my NuGet updates and viola! no problem - HAVING NOT CHANGED ANY OF THE ANCESTRAL PACKAGE NAMES BY EVEN A SINGLE CHARACTER.
So, what do I conclude from this? It is my belief, and the guys that actually build nuget and nuget.server should take a closer look at the errors being thrown, such that I think that the error is not so much a path too long error, rather it's a "hey, I didn't find the file I expected so the file name is full of junk (and probably too long now) so I'll throw an error that says it's too long and quit". It's seemingly a failure to handle a missing package/package directory that is causing this particular problem
I solved my problem by ensuring that all the package directories were clean of all junk and rebuilding from a clean source. My problem is now solved.

Update: While the above contributed to the solution, it was NOT the answer. Here is the sequence of events that led to this problem and it's ultimate resolution.
The solution was created in the C:\User\Sam\Documents\Visual Studio 2017\Projects directory with the specified name of AWE.Lib.ADO.MsSqlSvr.ServerEntityHandler. This worked just fine, no errors. However due to a change in naming scheme from on high, the root directory for this project was changed from "C:\User\Sam\Documents\Visual Studio 2017\Projects" to "C:\User\Sam\Documents\Visual Studio 2017\Projects\DotNet_4.7\AWE 8.x". No problem, I thought - given that a co-worker who also happens to be a MS MVP had told me that all naming length restrictions had been removed in VS 2017. So...I moved the project from it's current home to the directory specified. Compiles just fine, brings in UPDATED BUT ALREADY INSTALLED nuget packages just fine, etc.
Or so I thought. When I needed to add a NEW (one that had not been a part of the solution before) nuget package to the mix, I received the above error. Turns out that the new name of the receiving solution is a few characters longer than VS will accept - the naming length restrictions are STILL IN PLACE.
How did I finally solve the problem: After struggling with this, I threw my hands up and decided to start all over again - a true File | New. So, I started with a new solution named as follows:
"C:\Users\Sam\Documents\Visual Studio 2017\Projects\DotNet_4.7\AWE 8.x\AWE.Lib.ADO.MsSqlSvr.HndlrServerEntity"
THIS GENERATES AN ERROR - name too long. I wondered at Nuget's error in that it specifies that the name should be less than 248 characters in length or 260 maximum.
What I am allowed to use iaw the new solution dialog is this: "C:\Users\Sam\Documents\Visual Studio 2017\Projects\DotNet_4.7\AWE 8.x\AWE.Lib.ADO.MsSqlSvr.HndlrServerEnt", for a total of 106 characters in length. If the directory is shortened, I can add to the length of the name. If I shorten the length of the actual solution name, again, VS'll accept it. So long as the total length of directory plus solution name is less than or equal to 106 characters, there isn't a problem.
The nasty bit comes from creating the solution in one location and having it work in all respects just fine, moving said solution to a different directory, still having it function in all respects (I did NOT need to add any new nuget packages yet), then trying to add a new nuget package to the mix after the move. THAT is what triggered the above nuget error.
So...the ultimate "fix", use a shorter name as it seems that 106 characters is the limit despite what the error messages are saying (and what the MS MVP was told/told me).
There is another reason for this error message by the compiler.
While building , make sure the source code is placed at a folder location which is less than 260 characters long.
For example, a path like C:\Users\User\source\Services\Exp\Sample-web-application-indot-net-displaying-RestAPI\Sample-web-application-indot-net-displaying-RestAPI\SportsStore is around 150 characters long but there are sub folders in the solution which in turn have source code files and so on.
Sometimes the overall length of the path of some files breaches the 260 character length.
I think the future versions of Visual Studio would have a bigger length allowance. Until then, we can make sure that our file names are not too long.
I was running into the same issue after I moved a project to another folder. In my case I closed VS renamed the .vs folder in root to 1.vs (effectively removing it) and re-opend my project.
In my case, I was first trying to install a package using Manage Nuget Packages for Solutions and was getting this error. Then I tried installing same package using Package Manager Console and it worked fine. I again uninstalled that package and tried installing using Manage Nuget Packages for Solutions and this time it worked fine as well.
Well in my experience all i had to do is move the entire project to my c: drive, delete unnecessary folders to ensure the path would be shorter. Done deal.
This error comes to me when I tried to copy the project folder to OneDrive and the problem is that OneDrive is not uploading long name files.
I've fixed this issue by just copying the project folder then paste it in the new laptop using USB.

Move the folder of the project to a folder within a few levels from the root dir. For example the Desktop and voila.
Try to close Solution from File->Close Solution and opening it again.
For my case uninstalling, installing, or even updating NuGet packages, nothing was working but reopening(sometimes you can also close and open Visual Studio again) the Solution did the magic.

Getting "Error: Failed to connect to OmniSharp"

I'm trying to get VSCode working with my Unity projects, and every time I select the Project icon (the little fire at the bottom) I get the following error:
Error: Failed to connect to OmniSharp
Is anyone else getting this?
You need to download the most recent version of "mono". Open up terminal and pass in brew install mono. Then "Pick a project" and select the ..-csharp.sln file and you should be up and running.
Ok, made some progress and gotten a few Unity projects working. It seems that you need some prerequisites installed, a clean up of your Unity project folder, and possibly some hand editing of your .sln and .csproj files.

I have a completely different answer: it's the runtime that VSCode is using. It doesn't match up with what it thinks it needs. I have to remember that we're still in beta and that things are changing rapidly. I had my dnvm running beta 7, but VSCode (and OmniSharp, by extension) is looking for beta 6, so it was failing. I updated my runtime using this this post as a clue. Now I have VSCode 0.7.0 using the beta 6 runtime. I have no idea how to tell what it's looking for...I just guessed based on when they were both released. HTH

Metro App cannot open package.appxmanifest

I have this Metro App project that I just tried building for the Windows Store.
After completing the buildprocess (with no errors) I can't open the appxmanifest xml file in visual studio anymore. If I select "STORE" > "Edit App Manifest" I get the following error message: "Value does not fall within the expected range."
I can't open any manifest file in any project now.
Does anybody know whats happening, do I need to reinstall Visual Studio or whats going on?
I'm pretty desperate, so any suggestions are welcome.
Found the answer here http://forums.asp.net/t/1836720.aspx/ - so i tried deleting the .suo files from the project, and now it seems to work. I have no clue why that would affect newly created/other/checked out projects, weird behavior indeed?
(Since I am both new to SO and to Visual Studio, I don't know if answering my own question is considered bad practice, if it is, please let me know what I should do instead)
It's an XML file, so you could try to open it with a text editor to figure out if there's an invalid value set somewhere. You could always compare to a default Package.appxmanifest from a new project.
Can your fellow coworker open the manifesting file you're having trouble with?
The first thing to check is to make sure you are running Visual Studio as an admin. (Right click, run as administrator)
Try creating a completely new project. Save it without modifications. Build it. See if you can open the manifesting file in that project. If you can't, try a XAML/C# project instead of JS just to see if something is wrong with the specific project type.
And before you try completely reinstalling, you might try resetting your Visual Studio settings. Make sure to take a backup just in case you need to get your environment back to where it was once you find the issue.

Receive message "A signed resource has been added, modified, or deleted" when trying to debug an App on iPhone

While attempting to debug a build created using the 3.2 SDK on an iPhone device I receive the message "A signed resource has been added, modified, or deleted.".
I can clean, rebuild, then install with no error, but if I try to install without cleaning the error shows.
Anyone have an idea as to what might be causing this?
I found a workaround for the bug.
If you delete the .app file in build/Debug-iphoneos/ before building for the device, the app gets installed without errors.
And there is a simple way to do that before every build.
Make sure you have selected "Device" in the dropdown overview menu.
In XCode go to Project > New target...
Then find "Shell Script target" under MacOSX/Other
Name it and add it to the current project
Now, in the left navigation panel, under targets, expand your newly created target and double-click on Run Script.
In the window that opens replace "# shell script goes here" with "rm -fr build/Debug-iphoneos/*.app" (without the quotes).
Now open your main target preferences and under Direct Dependencies add your newly created target.
Build and Go! :)
This error occurs when there is a special character in the Product Name. In my case it was a "?"
If you change the Product Name it automatically updates the "Bundle Name" and "Bundle Display Name" so it is often the best choice to rename an app.
If you want to include special characters in the app name you have to manually rename the "Bundle Name" and "Bundle Display Name"
Bundle Name: This is the actual app bundle name in the file system such as "Awesome App.app". It is generally not visible to the user.
Bundle Display Name: This is a short name displayed under the app icon on the device. Since the bundle name would be truncated to "Awes…tion" you have the option to have a shorter name which fits better such as "Awesome App". It should be similar to the App Store name (set in iTunes Connect)
This is pretty clearly a bug in the 3.2 SDK, but I don't want to downgrade. I've found that doing a Clean by pushing Command+Shift+K, then Return is pretty fast before pushing Command+R to build.
Xcode 8, reason of the "A signed resource has been added, modified, or deleted." was that target was signed with an enterprise provision profile.
In my case, it happened when no changes were made. Make a change to any file and run again.
This can have several causes. The fastest way to figure out what is causing it is to go into Xcode, Window menu, Devices, then click the reveal button at the bottom of the pane to show the Console. Now attempt to run. You should see log output that names the specific files it is complaining about.
Most of the solutions previously posted are just artificial ways of getting Xcode to regenerate the contents of the build folder and/or re-sign the files.
In my case, my WatchKit extension was somehow acquiring references to Cocoapods frameworks that were only targeted toward the main app so they got signed during the build, then pruned later (as they were not used). Then on device, iOS complained that they were missing from the .appex folder for the extension. I ended up not needing any pods in the extension so I just removed them all and removed the extension as a target, then did some minor cleanup to remove the pod-related debris left in the build steps. Now everything works perfectly.
(SOLVED) This is a weird one. I tried everything I could find. Eventually I changed the product name from "Unit Tests (device)" to "Device Unit Tests" - removing the brackets. Now everything works. The spaces in it appear to be fine.

I've just run into this bug with two static library projects. One builds and tests using the GHUnit test runner on the device without a problem. The other projects will not install and gets this error. That means it's something thats different between these two projects. I've so far tried wiping the build directory, taking spaces out of the executable name, and various clean and builds as suggested here.
Same for me, thought it has something to do with multiple targets etc. because I changed a lot there. But it's highly possible that it's a Bug in the 3.2.2 release since I did not test extensively in this sdk version before the massive target changes in my project.
solved my issue!!!
I found out by accident that somehow a space " " found it's way into the Product Name of my app so it was called "First Second.app" instead of "FirstSecond.app". After deleting the space the issue was gone!
I changed it here:
right click on target
Get Info
Build Tab
Packaging Section
Product Name <- The name here will be used for the bundle (.app) name

I could solved by changing project name.

I was getting this same error, but intermittently. I tried all the above and it still didn't work. Today I found what was causing it.
The error seems to occur when editing a xib in interface builder. If you try to run while the interface builder is open in xcode it will cause the above error. To solve just close the interface builder editor. i.e. just select a code file from your project so you are in the Source Editor.
The simplest (and probably most common cause) appears to be rebuilding without any changes.
So the simplest thing to cure it is to make a trivial change to a source file (such as adding a space, then deleting it), and then rebuilding.
If this doesn't work, feel free to try all the other answers here.
For months, I'd get this error without realizing it was due to such a simple cause. I'd usually do a Clean Build to get rid of it.
When I created ipa through terminal using xcodebuild commands, ipa created but while installing it I was getting same error. exportOptionsPlist solved my issue.
xcodebuild -exportArchive -archivePath projectPath/myapp.xcarchive -exportPath projectPath/myApp.ipa -exportOptionsPlist ProjectFolder/exportPlist.plist
In my case, Quit and restarting XCode worked.
For me the issue was related to the provisioning profile settings. The clue to this was that debug builds were installing ok, but release builds were not. I wanted to test a release build, so I ran the scheme with that build configuration.
I fixed it by duplicating the Release Configuration, then modifying those fields in the Build Settings to have the same provisioning stuff as if I am debugging it.
(Adding another build configuration will give you headaches if you are using Cocoapods however, then you'll have to modify your Podfile)
I'm getting the same thing, when installing on a iPod Touch. I can't link for the simulator (for other reasons), so can't say whether the problem occurs there.
Yes, rebuilding clean or deleting the app from the device allows me to install again. Neither are desirable, iterative solutions!
The minimal "cleaning" I've come across as a work around is manually deleting the Foo.app in the build/Debug-iphoneos directory.

I had the same problem in Xcode 3.2.1 when I put a + in my app name. Specifically the "product name" in the build settings. It is fine to have a + in the bundle name in your Info.plist. The same probably applies to other punctuation characters.
Go to Window > Organizer > Projects > Find your project and delete derived data
I got this error intermittently while installing app using iPhone config utility on Windows7. Following solution works - Go to C:\Users\{lanusername}\AppData\Local\Temp and delete app specific folders (e.g. abc.app) and try installing app again.
I reported this bug on ICU (Windows versions) to Apple in June 2011. With the following workarounds:
The workaround is this ....

1) Close ICU
2) Delete the temp folder: c:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Temp\[AppName].app
3) Delete the deploy folder: c:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\AppleComputer\MobileDevice
4) Restart ICU. Drag in the App and install normally.

I also faced the same issue. After wasting lot of time I realized that my product name has a special character "?" which cased the problem
Having the DerivedData folder at a network location caused this problem for me.
After trying everything else, I found out my workstation couldn't agree with the University server about what the time was. (It thought everything was always modified). I also had to clean for every rebuild to avoid that frustrating message.
In the end I gave up and built locally, changing Xcode > Preferences > Locations ... feeling altogether pretty dumb for having ever built over the network.
We ran into this issues on XCode_6.3.1. We were building a AppleWatch app, with an extension. We do have a bunch of Pods.. After debugging the issue for almost a bunch of hours, what we found was that there was an issue with the way a file was adde to the project..
It seems like some references to a unused file was sitting in the iPhone App, though it was used in the Watch App.. It turns out that the error XCode was showing was totally useless.
After removing this file and re adding it back to the project the project started working fine & was able to install to the device. To make it even harder to debug the issues, the debug version was installed without an issue, but was unable to install the norman version..
Make sure you add your files to the right target and, look at git history and see if there are lingering fragments that are added to the wrong target.
This is a very general error message indicating something is wrong during the validation process of the code signature. To find out the specific error, you can go to Xcode->Window->Devices and check your device log.
In my case, I have following console spew
Feb 1 18:53:07 iPod-touch installd[40] : 0x1001f8000 -[MICodeSigningVerifier performValidationWithError:]: 192: Failed to verify code signature of : 0xe8008017 (Signed resources have been added, removed, or modified)
Check on this 3rd party framework again, I found an extra CodeResources file under the framework root. Remove that file fixed the problem.

ClickOnce error after deploying -- has a different computed hash than specified in manifest

Afer deploying my VSTO add-in with ClickOnce, I get the following error message when trying to launch setup.exe:
File, Addin.resources.dll, has a different computed hash than specified in manifest.
Why is this happening? What can I do to fix this?
I was able to resolve this just by doing a clean build and publish. For some reason the manifest wasn't updated like it was supposed to.

You can add a few commands on your build server to resign the manifest. After publishing, execute each command inside the folder containing the manifest and the vsto, respectively.

I'm using Visual Studio 2013 SP2, and am having the same issue.
Regularly, I will create a new release of our Excel Addin by Rebuilding the solution in VS, signing it, deploying it, but it is uninstallable.
If I then quit Visual Studio, then run Visual Studio again, Rebuild and Redeploy, then it'll work without any problems. Which is fine... but, of course, it means each time I deploy, I need to check that the damn thing will install okay !
It's worrying that VS continues to build installables which quietly contain this issue.
There are plenty of articles mentioning this bug, errr, issue (some from 8 years ago !!), suggesting I need to "rebuild my manifest file", but why doesn't this happen automatically when a do Rebuild in Visual Studio..?
